As I continue to explore the notion of community, shared learning experiences and the responsibility learners should have for one another, this idea has potential. Certainly, in an ideal world this would happen organically and is something I continually address with my students but this format/structure could aid in this.

BTW, if you'd like to have a conversation about the larger issue of classroom community, I'd be interested. Always wanted to explore ways to empower students in this area.

Re: Three things I wish I’d said to shift thinking about assignment deadlines

I am conflicted on this issue. I extended deadlines because I thought it was more important for students to do their own work (even at a later date) rather than copy someone else's work just to get it done. This policy backfired on a few students who let work pile up because the did not feel enough pressure and let work and learning pile up.

Re: Three things I wish I’d said to shift thinking about assignment deadlines

Complete BS? Not really. I am in the corporate world. Deadlines are necessary. People are given some leeway at times. However, someone who continuously misses deadlines WILL lose their job or the business of a company. Shipments are expected at certain times. Customers expect merchandise in the store and will go elsewhere if it's not there. Deadlines need to be met.

Some people I work with don t like their jobs. They do it anyway. The bosses don't take the time to make everyone who works for them more motivated. They don't have the time for that. And they can still prosper and be a successful business. Sometimes people are just expected to do their job or complete a task that they find meaningless. That's the way life is and that's the truth. You cannot
Deny it.

Re: Three things I wish I’d said to shift thinking about assignment deadlines

I generally agree, but I do still struggle with #3. How realistic is it to expect that students will be "turned on" to doing assignments in, oh say Algebra, that truly will help them understand better but that are maybe not intrinsically motivating? I struggle with making my class look anything like the ideal looks.

Re: Three things I wish I’d said to shift thinking about assignment deadlines

The deadlines in the business world argument is complete BS. They get missed all the time. All. The. Time. There's no group of humans (my guess is thanks to bell schedules) that are more concerned with timeliness than teachers. Even there, when they're late with things as professionals they get (and even expect) breaks. The same courtesy is rarely extended to the children they teach.

Re: I get to teach a master’s course on social networking and schools. You can't get here soon enough!

Sense the challenge, not the fear of failure. The environment here at CU is too supportive for fear, and everyone from Dean Shepard on down recognizes the investment you're putting into the program and the investment we're putting in you, and for that reason we don't want you -- or will let you -- fail. And that includes me. As happy as I am for you, I'm selfishly happy for myself, as I know having you around will push me in some ways that need pushing.
You may have a different set of assignments, but in my Multicultural Ed class (required of all 2nd year students) we wrote an autobiographical/sociohistorical essay examining our family and the various circumstances (including policies, privileges, disadvantages, etc.) that shaped our educational path. Something tells me you'll enjoy that assignment, and enjoy hearing about the stories of your classmates. I sure did.

Re: Does this mean I’ll need to change my twitter handle?

I didn't really understand the sense of uncertainty until I read this.
